Introduction to High Voltage
This 1-day, in-person, hands-on course is designed for managers and technical staff who wish to gain a practical and useful understanding of high-voltage systems, with a particular focus on testing. Attendees may have prior technical experience at any level, but not necessarily with high-voltage equipment. A basic understanding of electricity is recommended.
Course Fee: $565.00 + GST (includes all course materials and meals)
Participants Will Gain an Appreciation Of:
The usefulness of high voltage for power transmission
Fundamentals of electricity as applied to HV equipment
How electrical power networks are configured
The types of HV products used in power systems
General safety principles when working with HV systems
Insulation degradation and failure mechanisms
Methods and techniques for testing HV systems
What You’ll Learn
The course combines theory and practical sessions. The theory component provides a clear understanding of HV concepts, safety considerations, and testing techniques. These are reinforced through hands-on exercises using real HV test equipment, giving participants confidence and practical insight.
Part A – Theory
An introduction to high-voltage systems and testing.
Topics include:
Why high voltages are used in power systems
General safety considerations for HV work
A brief review of basic electricity
Electric fields and voltage distributions
Insulation degradation and breakdown
Examples of HV systems in use
Practical differences between AC and DC HV systems
Testing techniques for HV equipment
Part B – Practical
Hands-on exercises with real HV generators, voltage dividers, and test equipment.
Practical activities include:
Operation of AC and DC Hipots
Observation of electrical arcing
Measurement of high voltages
Insulation resistance and Tan Delta testing
Detection and measurement of partial discharges
Participants will also complete a short written assessment to consolidate learning.
Certificate of Completion
Awarded upon successful completion of the assessment.
Please Note: This course is not a certification course for working on high-voltage equipment; it is designed purely for practical understanding and testing knowledge.
Why Choose This Course
