Figure 1: Uptake of Grid Connected Solar Power Systems in New Zealand With this growth in the size of systems, the solar panel strings open circuit voltage and short circuit current have also been growing at a rapid rate. As with any electrical system this is going to require ongoing testing and maintenance. As solar systems have evolved, so have the required specifications of the equipment used to test these systems. The early equipment was low voltage, but now you can have solar arrays well in excess of 1000V DC and up to 40A short circuit current. This trend is predicted to continue as equipment design evolves. Therefore, a consideration must be made when looking for test equipment. In order to future proof your instruments, there must be head space to allow for predicted increases in open circuit voltage and short circuit current. For example, there is test equipment designed to do the following tests:
BUT only up to 1000V DC. Whereas you have other equipment that will do the same tests up to 1500V open circuit voltage and 40A closed circuit current on live panels. If you would like to contact us, we would be more than happy to go through the options with you. A Ray of HumourWhy do engineers love solar testing?
Recent EventsOur team recently delivered specialised cable testing training in Mongolia, working with local engineers and technicians to support safe, reliable high-voltage testing. The training covered practical VLF testing, diagnostics, and best-practice methodologies using the latest HVA60/90 and PDTD60/90 equipment. Participants gained hands-on experience, using correct test setups, performing accurate, repeatable measurements, interpreting results, improving their confidence in the field. It was a great opportunity to share expertise, strengthen industry capability, and build strong connections with a fantastic team.

Training Spotlight: Upskill for the New Year! We’ve had a huge month of training at Electrotest, with our RF Course, our first-ever SPARKvue training course, and our first PAT Training Course all happening in November. It’s been great seeing so many people keen to build practical skills they can take straight back into the field (or the classroom). During training, our goal is simple: help you gain real, applied skills that improve your work, strengthen your capability, and open up new opportunities. Whether you want to upskill, stay compliant, or expand the services you can offer, our training courses are designed to support you. 🌟 Brand New & Upcoming Courses UPS Installation & Commissioning Course: Launching February 2026
Designed especially for electricians, this course teaches how to install, test, and commission UPS systems correctly. You’ll gain the confidence to support customers, offer informed recommendations, and even add UPS installation as a billable service. SPARKvue Training for Teachers We delivered our first SPARKvue course on 18th November, and it’s officially CPD accredited for 6 CPD credits. Perfect for science teachers wanting hands-on experience with PASCO sensors, data collection, and classroom applications. Another course will run in Term 1, 2026. PAT Training Course Our first PAT course ran this month, giving attendees a solid understanding of safety checks, insulation tests, earth continuity, and AS/NZS 3760 compliance. Ideal for anyone responsible for workplace electrical safety. Introduction to High Voltage Course A foundation course covering HV systems, safety practices, and core concepts for anyone working around or near high-voltage equipment. RF Training Starting Again in the New Year Kick off the new year by levelling up your RF knowledge. Both courses are CPD accredited and hands-on. Any training enquiries? We would love to hear from you! Tip of the Month: This One Test Tells You If Your PAT Is Behaving 🧰As part of using electrical test equipment, it’s good practice to carry out your own “sanity check” periodically, and not be reliant on the calibration status of it. Here’s a quick check that will tell you three useful things about your Portable Appliance Tester in one test. Connect a digital multimeter (set to 600/1000VDC range) to the neutral and earth slots of your PAT test socket and proceed with insulation resistance test. Three outcomes should be observed:
This test is no substitute for calibration, however you may find it useful in the field if an unusual insulation resistance reading encountered.
