Description
Melting point is an important property for determining the identity and purity of compounds, which is a focus of many college synthetic chemistry labs. The built-in 3x magnifying eyepiece allows students to easily observe the melting process. The device requires Bluetooth pairing within SPARKvue, PASCO Capstone™, or Chemvue software to graph temperatures as you monitor physical changes of substances you are melting.
You can add the USB Melting Point Apparatus Eyepiece Camera (sold separately) to record the process for real-time viewing on a larger screen in the software. The camera allows you to replay the time synched images for a more confident determination when melting occurs. With the variable ramp rates, you can quickly raise the sample temperature in the software before tailing off near melting. The hold temp command ensures all substances reach a uniform temperature without surpassing the melting event. Software then allows the user to choose a timed ramp to control the rise through the melting point and accurately note the melting temperature before the cooling fan quickly restores the heating block to room temperature.
Additional commands allow the user to control the eyepiece camera (SE-6215) to start and stop the image collection at controlled rates near the melting point. The playback feature in Capstone allows the user to confidently choose starting and end temperatures of the melting process. In SPARKvue and Chemvue, the time stamp on the image allows you to look up the melt temp on the associated graph.
