Description

PASCO’s Wireless Barometer with Display allows students to monitor atmospheric conditions as atmospheric pressure and temperature are changing. Placed in a small weather shelter or by an open window, this sensor allows students to watch weather systems pass in real time. Great for students making weather journals or comparing weather features to changes in atmospheric conditions.

This Barometer has a bright OLED screen that is easily visible, even when outdoors. Students power on the sensor and get instantaneous measurements. It also supports live data streaming and remote logging with PASCO software for deeper analysis.

The pressure sensor is sensitive to changes in altitude, which can aid short-term field work to determine altitude changes along a hiking trail. Pair with a mobile device and GPS to make elevation models by walking in a grid through a field. Use discerningly if the weather is changing in your local area, which will cause apparent changes in altitude when in fact it is due only to atmospheric changes.

Students can study how a high pressure atmosphere generally accompanies clear sunny skies. They may also notice the air may be cooler than normal as high pressure systems move through. With a little experience, students can also see how low pressure generally brings cloudy, rainy conditions and may see that the air is slightly warmer than normal. Great for spurring classroom discussions and lots of comparisons to investigate like cloud types that appear at certain pressures and temperatures, how pressure varies as storms pass through, what happens to atmospheric pressures on windy days. More advanced students may be interested in how insects or other animals know when to change behavior with coming weather. Provides natural opportunities for students at any stage to engage with weather.
